What is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant, simply put, is a replacement for your tooth. It is a fixture placed in your jaw that allows you to eat, chew, and smile when your natural tooth has been removed or fallen out. The process involves affixing a titanium post to your jaw and then placing a cap on later to function as a crown.

Our Mission Viejo dentist will begin by examining your teeth with an X-Ray to better understand how your implant can fit in among your other teeth. During your consultation, make sure to tell your dentist about your medical history if there are any concerns your dentist will need to be aware of.
A dental implant procedure will usually occur in two parts. First, a metal anchor is placed in your jawbone during your first appointment to act as a root to the implant. In some cases, your jaw will not be dense enough to accept the anchor, in which case a bone grafting procedure may be necessary. This is an entirely different treatment that will require several other visits, but luckily it’s rarely needed.
After the anchor and abutments are placed, there will be a waiting period of about three to six months as your implant bonds with your jaw. The final crown is created during this time based on an impression taken of your teeth. It is recommended that you mainly stick to soft foods during this time. During your second procedure, another incision will need to be made in your soft gum tissue to expose the anchor, and a healing collar will be attached to allow your tissue to heal from the incision. Once this is done, the collar is removed. Finally, the cap is attached to the abutments on the anchor, and you have a dental implant as good as any tooth.

You can expect some soreness and pain after both procedures, but this should not last longer than a few days each time. Any discomfort can be treated with over-the-counter medication. Let your dentist know if the pain continues more than a week or feels particularly severe. Unless they’ve had general anesthesia, most patients can return to their daily activities right away, but it is recommended you avoid hot liquids and hard foods for at least 24 hours.
