What Is A Dental Filling?
Dental fillings are a very common procedure and are often used to help repair and restore your teeth. More than not, dental filings use plastics, glass, synthetic materials, or even metals. These filings are used to replace areas of your teeth that have decayed or have rotted due to cavities. These new fillings can also be used to restore cracked or broken teeth caused by teeth grinding or hard use.

What Are Advantages & Disadvantages To Receiving Each Type Of Filling?
Fillings are very common procedures and over the years, we have observed many advantages and disadvantages to them.
Advantages:
- Porcelain fillings can last more than 15 years and are resistant to staining.
- Composite fillings match the color of your teeth and are the most common choice.
- Gold fillings can last upwards of 15 years but can be expensive.
- Silver fillings are not as expensive but not as common as composite resin.
- Glass fillings are cost-effective. These are recommended for gum line treatments and are mainly used as a fluoride treatment only.

The disadvantage to receiving fillings is all dependent on the amount of decay, price, and the level of sophistication needed to properly treat the affected tooth. For each type of filling we note the following:
- Glass fillings are weaker than resin or metal. These typically don’t last as long and are prone to fractures.
- Composite fillings can be prone to chipping but do last longer than glass.
- Silver fillings may need additional work to remove portions of the teeth to fit the mold. These can crack and may trigger an allergic reaction in some people.
- Gold fillings are the most expensive and can require multiple visits to fully complete.
- Ceramics fillings can be just as expensive as gold fillings.
What Is the Process Of A Dental Filling?
The process of dental filling is mostly straight forward. Unlike dental bonding, receiving a dental filling may require additional work depending on the type of filing and level of decay. At Mission Viejo Dental, we ensure that you will be carefully treated each time.
To begin, our dentists will numb the area with a local anesthetic, around the targeted tooth. Once the area is fully numb, we will use tools to chip away and remove the decayed area. When the area is removed and prepared for the filling, we will clean the area and remove all traces of bacterial infections.
Once the area is fully cleaned, our dental team will begin to insert the filling in layers, shape it to fit your tooth, and cure it. After the new dental filling is safely placed, our team will make sure to polish it, test for comfortability, test functionality, and ensure its structural permanence.
How Should I Care For My New Filling?:
When you have received your new dental filing, our dental team will instruct you on how to properly care for each filling type. As a general rule of thumb, we recommend that you continue with dental visitation or cleanings, maintain good dental hygiene, and reach out to us if you should experience any difficulties.
Some of these difficulties may include:
- Feeling sharp edges
- Allergic reactions to metal fillings
- A feeling of any cracks or missing pieces within the new filling
- Have any irregular tooth sensitivity
